Make sense of file sizes

Digital storage is measured in bytes, and each step up multiplies by roughly a thousand. This converter moves a value cleanly between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes so you can compare files, downloads and storage limits.

Decimal and binary

  • Decimal (1 KB = 1000 bytes): The standard used by hard drive makers, network speeds and most consumer specifications.
  • Binary (1 KiB = 1024 bytes): The standard used by operating systems and memory, where each step is a power of two.

The two systems drift apart as sizes grow, which is why a 1 terabyte drive shows up as roughly 931 gibibytes in your operating system. Switch between them with one click.

How to use it

  • Choose decimal or binary depending on the context you are working in.
  • Enter the amount and select the unit to convert from and to.
  • Read the converted size, or press Swap to reverse the direction.
